Week 9-10

12 november 2015 - Nanaimo, Canada

Sunday 8 November

I went to Courtenay and Campbell River on this day. Or well, drove through Courtenay, which is a city made out of two smaller towns. At Campbell River we stopped at the docks and we saw a seal swim by. It dove under before I could get a picture of it. There were also a couple of jellyfish and loons, birds that need a bit of a start before they can take off.

When we walked back to the car, we saw a heron standing on a wooden beam with next to it something that seemed like a log. That log turned out to be a small seal that was hanging around on the dry land. It actually posed for a quick moment when a lady called out to it.

Tuesday 10 November

Today was the first of the sad days. My final day working at Millstone. I had so much fun that day too and they gave me a card signed by them and it was just so sweet I almost burst into tears. I am going to miss all of them so much. They were such great people and they all made me promise to email them and keep in contact. They also claimed that they wanted to come around to the Netherlands, but I wonder if they ever will.

Wednesday 11 November

So, today it was a very special day in the Commonwealth. It was Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day!

These past two weeks, poppy donation boxes could be found at almost every store and coffee shop. People donate money and take a poppy in return. The money goes to the veterans.

It is this date because hostilities ended on the 11th of November at the 11th hour in 1918, the end of the First World War. So, a minute of silence is held at eleven o'clock in the morning.

It's a national holiday for the Canadians, so no school or work for most people. They not only remember the First World War, but they remember all the people who served , and continue to serve in times of war, conflict and peace.

This year something pathetic has happened. Someone has been stealing poppy boxes. In Calgary at least 21 boxes have been stolen and the thief has not yet been caught. On Remembrance Day, two more were stolen. Honestly, I think that's just despicable. Link

Thursday 12 November

And this was my last day at the hospital. It was a busy day and there wasn't that much time for talking, but it was fun nonetheless. I'm going to miss all of them and I hope I will get to see them again in the future, maybe.

So, this will be the final update from Canada really. I will do a small one when I'm with both feet in the Netherlands again.
